Time to get a new Spring campaign letter ready. Do you think Bellis has a history of partisan replacement of the city's legal staff?

I doubt if he even knew DGA or Ziggy.

It even appears that he cleverly failed to contribute to the guy with that history.

His integrity will be tested by guys who want him to say baseless stuff or make foolish arguments. I suspect he will pass that test, which will be a real downer for the Kool Aid crowd.

That's the trouble with recruiting a candidate to stand for decency. There's always the risk he'll be, well, decent.

So you only need to step in and make ridiculous, misleading statements in a letter if Spring's opponent goes with the time honored strategy of saying baseless stuff or making foolish arguments? Foolish to whom? You? We all look forward to your unique participation to save your job for another 4 years.

And who will test your integrity. I've seen that laughable letter. If not illegal, it was at the least unethical. It's unfortunate and shows the desperate lengths to which the local Dems will go to save their jobs.

0640,

How about you wait until I make a statement before you call it ridiculous or misleading?

A discussion based upon real acts with real consequences: What a concept!

0816,

You get to influence your friends (or try) in any election with any argument you choose to make. I guess your position is that I don't have that right...or maybe it's just that you're the ultimate decider of what's integrous and what isn't.

I was referring to the statement in your letter. Looking forward to some more of those real acts. Try to follow along.

I know you get to. I'm saying it's wrong and unethical and employees of the an office holder should abstain from "any active part" in a political campaign especially for that person's boss. There is no difference here from what the intention of the Hatch Act is. The letter was most definitely misleading.

You've had like 27 chances to express yourself clearly about what it is that you object to.

At least do it in a thread that's on topic or in your own space.

I don't think I've ever sent a letter in a city election over my signature where I wouldn't stand behind every word.

When you find some specific thing in a thread where it's relevant, maybe we'll talk about it.

What I posit is that one of the prohibited activities that covers state and local employees in the Hatch Act says they may not use their official authority or influence to interfere with or affect the results of an election or nomination. That's what your letter was attempting to do. Not sure how that is stupid or dishonest.

1234,

Congratulations. That was either the single most exquisitely stupid thing ever submitted here or the most intellectually dishonest. Hatch Act protection is Employee's in coded civil service protection (with a very few statutory exceptions for contract agencies).

You posit that people who serve at the pleasure of an elected person shouldn't be able to campaign for the guy who selects him. That's not the Hatch Act principle. That's your own little, made up world.

TYFCB and providing amusement.

And you just slide over the word "covers" like it is a mere detail.

Is the Governor's Chief of Staff "covered?" The McClean County Sheriff's Chief Deputy?

The general principle of the Hatch is, "If you have protection from politics, then you have to live with a prohibition from participating in certain levels of it."

Don't know where your purist view comes from but I'm sure it would be quite utopian. Write your congressman with it. BTW, I'm sure you were just as repelled by all of the evil political insider activity when CDN was Mayor.

Fair warning: I'm supporting the candidates I think worthy in this upcoming city election in whatever lawful way I deem appropriate and you're not proofreading my outgoing mail. My guess is you're also not on my address list.

Maybe I'll post my fan letters here and let you comment on what is either inaccurate or otherwise objectionable in your sanitary view of local politics.

We're Done Here.
