TONY LARUSSA AND THE END OF LAISSEZ FAIRE BASEBALL MANAGING

Much will be written about Tony LaRussa, what he's done and what he's won, but his legacy is likely to be something a bit different.

Nobody has ever managed regular season baseball like LaRussa. He literally contested every out. He did not wait for the day's pitchers to dictate the environment of a particular game. He sought to define it. Sparky Anderson would contest early matchups, but not every out.

Before LaRussa there was the belief that, if a team burned too brightly early in a game or early in a season, there would be a price to be paid for it later. Tony seemed to feel like the only game he could win today was the one scheduled for today and he would pull out all the stops to win that game and concentrate on future games in the future.

In the near term, that will be the fashion but it takes an intellect and demeanor like LaRussa's not to have that approach self-destruct. It remains to be seen but LaRussa will be baseballs version of Bill Parcells. This means his approach will be both successful and difficult for an ordinary man to duplicate.

LIBYA: AND HERE I THOUGHT WE WERE JUST PROTECTING THE PUBLIC

I was busy watching two young friends get married yesterday and didn't see this until today.

This was a news flash for me. All this time the U.S. was saying it wasn't bombing in support of any one side, just protecting the innocent public. Here, all of a sudden, we were on the rebels' side the whole time.

This reminds me of the golf teacher, David Ledbetter who counsels his weaker golfers to "Tell 'em where you aiming after you hit the ball."

CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL: GET A NEW CALCULATOR

You don't have to read the whole thing but look at this.

$224 Billion is peanuts. We probably have that just in downstate Illinois.

LOADED GUNS IN BARS AND CARS: EVERY CAUSE NEEDS A CHAMPION

Gotta read this just for the irony. Two things:

1. There may some chance that this guy didn't grasp the serious of being armed while impaired--just a shot in the dark on my part;

2. Why is it important to the story that he's a Baptist? Would it have been any less serious if he had been an Episcopalian? Must be a Tennessee thang, ya'll.

NEW YORK CITY: A VICTORY FOR THE PRO-FILTH FORCES

Gosh, I just love it when the people rise up in lawful protest. "Occupy Wall Street" has just forced the owner of the private park where they're,.....um...."parked" to Put off cleaning the place.

Nothing says "Freedom" like the random accumulation of litter and other putrifying waste. It just makes me all gooey inside when the forces of liberty win a significant, Ghandi-esque victory like this.

THE OLD IRAN-CARTEL TRICK: VARIATIONS ON A THEME

This is pretty interesting

Leave it to Al Jazeera to provide some counter-thought.

My problem with the this reasoning is that I think Holder would have thought of a ploy that didn't want guns and Mexicans in it, if he were really trying to get the stink off of hisownself.

Still, interesting argument that the Iranians have a disincentive to do anything like this.

It ain't simple out there, boys and girls. And we don't all see it through the same eyeballs.

No truth to the rumor that Hank Williams, Jr. is going to sing at the Al Jazeera shareholders' meeting.
