THIS HAS BEEN FIXED--THANKS TO OUR FRIENDS
I MISSED THE MEMO: WHEN DID WE ESTABLISH BARRIERS TO BEING A DEMOCRAT?:
Went over to see how our friends were doing this snowy day and got this message:

"Comments on this blog are restricted to team members. You're currently logged in as UMRBlog who is not a team member of this blog."

I was not trying to make a comment. I was just reading the comments and I got this warning that my comments were not wanted.

Is it because it's election day? Keep in mind I got blasted for posting anonymously, which I didn't do. Now they make it impossible for me to post any way but anonymously. Which way do you want it, friends?

No wonder they are of one mind. It's like Oprah. Any conflicting thoughts are banished. It's the american political equivalent of North Korea!

Here, all a responsible commentator has to do is wait until I clear the box. No secret handshakes, decoder rings or passwords required.

Speaking of team members - and this is a serious question - maybe you can explain why I saw Georgia Volm interviewed on WGEM news last night? THE NIGHT BEFORE AN ELECTION!

She's a candidate for Christ's sake! And there was nothing from the opposing candidate! Can you explain the equal time provision to us so that this somehow makes sense?

I know Volm is the current clerk and she was talking about voting, but you can't tell me that gives her a free ride to get on tv the night before a bitterly contested election on her friend's tv newscast to talk about how helpful her office will be.

How and where do I file an FCC complaint?

No wonder the animosity is so bitter.

The official can still appear in his/her official capacity. There is nothing new under the sun. County Clerks do this all over the state on the off year elections and it's just not grievable.

Go to our friends at QuincyDump for all the information you could ever want about filing an FCC complaint but I think, as long as she didn't say "vote for me!" this is just an "official capacity" appearance.

I take your point seriously but, as the former FCC chair said, "It is not our role to eliminate all the advantages of incumbency."

That is about the best answer I can give. You can argue that She should be required to use a deputy but what would you do where the office is so small there is no able deputy. It's a hard thing to legislate because voter awareness is part of her job.

I remember this came up when Jackie Schlipman ran against George Schrage and the then State's Attorney gave a similar opinion to the outraged GOP camp.

Fair question. Now I have one for you: Can animosity still be animosity if it is not bitter? I can argue either side of that one.

Thanks for coming by.

Oh,

Silly me. QuincyDump is linked on the lower right side here. (What a concept, linking!).

If Volm wins, will she switch party affiliation after the general election?

It would surprise me greatly if that happened. Members of her family had been active in our party long before she ran for Clerk. She and Brad have close friends in the the party, so leaving would be uncomfortable.

For the foreseeable future, she's pretty much bulletproof in the General where Repubs can vote for her all they want without telling anybody. Why would she kiss off all those dem votes (including mine) by changing parties? It makes no strategic sense.

Thank you for saying out loud so we could look at it.

I don't think you're right about the equal time ruling. I mean if what you suggest is true, then any incumbent could call a press conference the night before an election and get saturated tv exposure. And all of it positive.

I gotta think there's a valid complaint in what she and WGEM did. I've heard some things.

Damn! Left that off my list of fave movies in the bio section of this Blog!

They wouldn't let me vote for you Nicky. They have this annoying rule about only voting once and it's supposed to be where you live. You think the County Board could change that? Let me vote on line early and often. A new first amendment argument: by limiting me to one vote, you're abridging my right to express myself. Think there's anything wrong with that?

Thanks for coming by. It's like a celebrity sighting. You da (dem.)man!

When Swarzenegger ran for governor of California, the tv stations couldn't air any of movies during the campaign... because of the equal time provision.

Anon 112,

Interesting but doesn't have a lot do with the "official duties" exception, does it?

Thanks for stopping by.

We congratulate our friends for removing this feature. Please bear with us, we are reciprocating by editing some posts that no longer have any currency. It's just that annoying day job that keeps us from getting it all done at once.
