IMMIGRATION THROUGH THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LOOKING GLASS
Credit to Josephus for tickling my thought process on this:
While we're happily discussing immigration as if the only problem were Juan and Rosita, another thorny issues bubbles.
Deeply talented people come here to study at our great universities. They get their PhD's in useful topic and many want to stay. For the most part, they can't. They build bridges, map DNA and practice advanced nursing.--but not here. They can't get H1B's. So we use our resources to develop their talents and let the talents go back to the benefit of India or Singapore. I suppose that's good world citizenship, if that's where the student wants to be. The man or woman who is 27, law-abiding and oozes useful talent would benefit this country. For the most part, he or she can't. Yes, I get the anti-terrorism aspect but we're rejecting people who could use their skills to make us healthier and more secure. They might even balance out the new generation of cheeto-eaters.
It's kind of like speech. The remedy for "bad" speech isn't no speech. It's "good" speech. Maybe the remedy for unavoidable "bad" immigration, is "good" immigration.

It's way too easy for the simple minded to label them all criminals.
