FOLLOW THE MONEY

There is a demonstration planned today in Chicago to oppose the Olympic games being awarded to that city in 2016. The rally consists of three things: First, yelling; Second, waving signs; Third, taking up a collection to send the Executive Director of the movement to Copenhagen to express the feelings of what he calls "84 per cent" of Chicagoans against the games.

Give the guy credit. He looks like a young, healthy fellow and he's hit on a way to get to Copenhagen on somebody else's dime. I'm sure he'll be very expressive while he's there.

Somebody always benefits from public protest movements. I imagine a lot of folks wish they'd have thought of this one first.

"Somebody always benefits from public protest movements."

True ... young Obama is getting a free trip to Copenhagen on the taxpayer dime, as he cashes in on anti-Bush sentiment.

The Afghanistan war is supposedly critical, yet he has only spoken to his chosen general once in 70 days, even as the general cries for help, and says we could lose.

I guess Barry is too busy booking Letterman, and flight plans to Denmark. No problem, school kids don't know where Afghanistan is anyway, but they ARE taught how Obama will put US in our place.

Obama .. Mmmm mmmm mmm.

The scuttlebutt is that after Obama goes to Copenhagen to make the case for this Chicago cronies, he will jet to Afghanistan to show his "concern" for the war he has said for more than two years was more important than Iraq---or some damned thing.

With Obama, you never know---because HE doesn't know. I mean, why can't he just go globetrotting and give his pretty speeches---why does he have to do even MORE? :-D

Really, what do people expect of him---to actually BE Commander in Chief? He didn't sign up for THAT.

QCE,

Your criticism of United States handling of Afhanistan doesn't go far enough. We didn't learn anything from the French in Vietnam and we didn't learn anything from the Russians in Afghanistan.

In the meantime--and Shrubby and Bubba can share the credit for this--we have a shortage in the one thing most needed in a counterinsurgency on somebody else's turf: The Helicopter.

Rummy, what the Hell were you thinking?

If only someone would have finished the job instead of invading and occupying a country for no apparent reason. Plenty of blame to go around on both sides of the aisle on this SNAFU. Of course the nightmare scenario is Israel goes off the reservation and bombs Iran. I don't think anyone wants to know where those dominoes stop falling

1256,

Really good comment. The bad news is we have this Crazy Uncle who could go off the reservation at any moment. The Good News is we have this Crazy Uncle who provides much more to fear for the Iranians than we do and it gives us, maybe, a chance to still be an honest broker.

My concern then and now is that the Iranian leaders really are committed to their radical religious view of violently bringing about the "end times". (not garden variety Muslims)

The hope of internal Iranian revolution (soon enough) is fading, and Israel feels they are very close to having the bomb, with help from NK and others. Plus there is some "unholy" alliance with Venezuela.

Many say Bush One should have gone on to Baghdad ... I don't know, it is impossible for the little people to know what deals were ongoing. But not going seemed inexplicable, and the 3 years before "the surge" seemed wasteful. But Iran is not Iraq.

The nightmare scenario as I see it, is Iran gets nukes and proves that their leaders really are religious fanatics, willing to nuke Israel directly, (and the "Great Satan" via third party terrorists), as they have promised.

I believe other ME powers oppose Iran and are (IIRC) opening paths for a bombing. I'm not sure how many dominoes are really standing closely with Iran, though China and Russia may use them as a pawn.

Obama seems to be distancing himself from Israel. He angered some allies by refusing to condemn Iran's "secret" nuke site in his UN speech, instead glowing about hope and change.

As someone said, the little debutante didn't want to wrinkle his dress on his big UN debut. Obama instead dreamily spoke of a world without nuclear weapons ... "citizen of the world" Obama ... good grief.

My guess is Obama will vacillate, and Israel would go in alone, not trusting Obama with attack details more than hours in advance. I don't trust him either.

But when it comes to bringing billions to his corrupt real estate cronies (follow the BIG money), our egomaniac in chief jets off to the front lines in Denmark, and takes no prisoners.

0821,

First on the Olympic Games. They're gonna be a stimulus somewhere. Might as well be in Illinois. Two weeks ago I thought it was a lock. Then I started hearing from friends in other countries who were persuaded by the "First time in South America" argument. Now, I'm thinking lock again. I can't see BHO going unless he knows it's precooked. He doesn't sign up for any black eyes.

On the ME balance of terror, I have a difficult time gaming out an Israeli first strike. They've probably done the tabletop on that about two thousand times and each time they get attacked from all sides. Just doesn't pass the smell test.

Of course, as you indirectly point out, when we weakened Iraq, we screwed up the balance of power in those parts for two generations.

Of course, for those you scoring at home, we have generals asking for a bigger footprint in Afghanistan with about a third of the helicopters we need and no replacements in the pipeline. Thank you, Rummy.

Strong arguments are made that Olympics are NOT stimulus, but an economic anchor ... with world wide recession and Chicago corruptocrats, even more so.

It may well be "pre-cooked" ... Obama would make US policy concessions to help his cronies, but does the euro gang really adore Him? I went to Atlanta 1996, let Brazil have 2016.

Obama is getting black eyes domestically, and he is out of his circle of love in Europe, despite his campaigning in Germany. But maybe Soros holds the key.

Israel had figured 2009 for Iran nukes ... they struck before, they will again if need be. Bush is gone and Obama is trash talking Israel, and Obama stated the Qom reactor is not peaceful, so the back of the envelope numbers just changed a lot ...

I'll have to trust you on the helicopter thing, though they seem vulnerable to SAMs ... our military still has some very able men ... I think. It seems they did better than Russia in Afghanistan.
