I'm sure the reference was to consent searches. Citizens consent to police searches for any number of reasons and officers are taught to use some discretion before making a request. I think that's all Chief Copley was talking about--as opposed to some freestanding "right" to promiscuously searching folks' vehicles.

Besides, Riff is really a very nice fellow. He's had his shots and everything.

Even our most undercover officers rarely wear rouge.

Lootie, Get a grip!

Would you rather have a police chief saying everything's just peachy or one saying maybe we need to dial this down a bit?

The guy is looking at objective data and seeing a pattern that does not fit his view of the role his officers should play in the community and proposing change. Would you rather have Buford T. Pusser saying we need to search more cars?

You and the police chief are on roughly the same page, yet you're ragging on him.

Had to cut and paste from another site since it applied to this conversation..

"Copley said his department has focused on traffic safety, resulting in a 43 percent increase in traffic stops from 2004 to 2005."

Quite disturbing when you put those next to the ISP numbers in this area. And UMRBLOG thinks we don;t need a reduction in force. I don't think the community as a whole became 43% worse drives than they were a year ago. Plus throw in the additional number put up by ISP this year. Get to solving REAL CRIMES GUYS!

"Copley calls "fishing."

Did they buy thier state issued lisence from DNR. If not I think we should demand that the Conservation Police step in and issue each one of these officers tickets from fishing without a lisence.

""There are at least six individual officers who appear to be conducting a lot of searches without success,""

at least they are pesistnent thier violation of our consitution rights.

"Copley said officers will get more "coachable sensitivity training" and information on the legalities of conducting searches."

But I thought we had a PROFESSIONAL police force. Either they are or they aren't. Let me give you a hint on this Chief, A professional police force would have allready been trained in the LAW.

Does anyone else wonder what percentage of our QPD officers have actually studied con law?

"QPD also will do a better job in the search reporting process and require officers to explain why the search was conducted. "

HUH????? and there was not a process in place prior to now? WHY NOT??? I'm starting to feel real safe in a George Orwell type of way.

""We want to get away from searching the vehicle just because we can," Copley said. "We want officers to have a good reason before they ask a person."

UMMM, no Mr. Copley we have a real problem now. Your officers must have probable cause to search a vehicle and a consent form signed to open any inner compartments. So what your saying is that your department is in violatin of the LAW. Can we as a public body issue your officers tickets for infringement of our rights?

*shakes head and grits teeth*

Lootie, Constructor of Story Problems.

For obvious reasons this is not the place for me to talk about policy but I do want to talk about how you constructed your equation.

You began with the assumption that QPD is only providing police services to Quincy Residents. Would that it were so. Quincy is the cultural, banking, medical, retail and entertainment center for an are of, give or take 200,000 folks, predominantly white. They have car wrecks, have property stolen from them and become involved in disputes. Some of them commit non-moving violations and some pass bad checks. You have to divide the stops by a much larger population assumption. Springfield and Bloomington have used a multiplier of 2.5. With the growth of Nauvoo, that's probably low for us.

I'm aware that makes some of the stats look worse and some better but it an obvious flaw in your construction.

I'm down for the night. You might wanna breathe into a brown paper bag for a while to get your respiration regulated.

Night.
