SPECIAL REPORT: ROLLIN', ROLLIN'....STILL ROLAND, AFTER ALL THESE YEARS

Whatever you might think of Rod Blagojevich, this is a solid move.

The Senate will have no choice but to seat Roland, a man who is kind of everybody's third choice.

My only question is "What the Hell kept you, Gov.?"

As I watch the chaos unfold, I am reminded of the Dr. Hook song "Roland the Roady" (Loved Gertrude the Groupy).

The Governor is an embarrassment to this state, and yet you are all for the governor making this appointment? I'm a Democrat, and I find Blagojevich reprehensible, he has lost all credibility. Why applaud any Senate appointment this man makes? The sooner our snail's-paced Legislation can get him out of office, the better.

Apparently, Sec. of State Jesse White does not agree:

Anon 1044,

Governor is a pukebucket, on that we are agreed.

By making the appointment, he does three things:

1. Communicates that he's on the job and not disabled by the vagaries of the two-front legal process;

2. Moves the frontier of discussion from his guilt or innocence to the peripheral issue of what will become of his appointee;

3. Demonstrates that he, unlike Pat Quinn, actually understands the appointment is an executive function in our state and "feel good" calls for special expensive elections are just populist claptrap--a reverse cult of personality.

Also, Roland is bulletproof in the US Senate. They are not going to refuse to seat a former statewide constitutional officer who happens to be an Af-American from the State of the Af-American Prez-Elect for the Seat of the Af-American Prez-Elect.

Hold the revulsion and appreciate the move.

JRG,

In this respect, SOS is what is called a ministerial officer. He has no discretion but to certify. Take one week for Gov. to get a writ of Mandamus out of the Ill Supreme Court, even in these unique circumstances.

Jesse's just wrong on the legal merits of this one.

This is anon 10:44

1. He's not on the job, he's scrambling to put on a good face when the majority of this state what him out of office. Of course he's disabled, you would have to be insulated from the media and the people of Illinois not to know that.

2. The peripheral vision has been in focus for a long time, the public does not trust him to make a serious, thought-out appointment. There will be much ingratiating going on and I'm sure he'll be shadow boxing tonight, but I think the majority of this state will be disgusted.

3. These are extraordinary circumstances, and Pat Quinn realizes that this whole process is tarnished. The "cult of personality," by allowing the general public to make a choice when the very credibility of our own governor is is such a dismal shape? Please....

I'm currently watching this farce on CNN.com I've never seen such smugness, it's disgusting, truly. Politics has hit rock bottom in this state and nation. It's ridiculous.

Did you watch that? Is Vince McMahon writing Blago's material now?

The Bobby Rush appearance was surreal. You're a racist if you don't go along with this. What a load of crap.

Nice use of the word "lynch" btw. If Rush Limbaugh uses "lynch" it is racist, but if Bobby Rush uses it, it's okay.

1216,

I'll stipulate he is a pussbucket--That's not really my topic. UNDER THESE UNIQUE CIRCUMSTANCES, I'm saying this as good a political move as he could have made. You're kind of excited and stuck on square one. I don't love this situation either but I can still admire a good (or less bad) gambit when I see one.

Bobby's arteries are getting a bit hard....I guess the Black Panther Conversion wasn't a complete take.

I love reasoning like that..."If you don't agree with me, you're a racist!" I'm sure the Rodster was counting on it.

Ironically, this is exactly the mentality BHO said he was running AGAINST.

Why in the world would any person in their right mind accept an appointment form this governor. I can't understand a man of Mr. Burris reputation getting involved with the dirt bag we have as a governor.

We in Illinois are the joke of the country and will be fodder for the late night talk shows for months.

It is another sad day for Illinois. Mr Lincoln must be rolling over in his tomb.

Very sad!!

The RIGHT move would have been for Blag to not make the appointment in the first place. Unfortunately Burris, who is a reasonably good guy, will get sh!t on in the process. Lie down with pigs...

The right thing would for Burris would have been a sad smile and shale of the head to Blag and a "Sorry dude, not this time. Find another patsy to front for you so you can try to turn your personal disaster into some form of political self-immolation."

Harry Reid has already said the Senate will not seat ANYONE appointed by Blag. And there is NOT going to be much pressure to make the leaders change their minds--not from Illinois.

And if Bobby R. thinks I'm a racist because I totally disagree with Blag making this appointment (not the person, I think Burris would be a decent choice--if named by someone other than Blag) then so be it. I'm a racist in Bobby R.'s eyes.

Fortunately those that know me (and those whose opinions actually matter) know otherwise, and I can safely ignore Congressman Rush's opinion on this particular issue.

I'll bet you $100.00 to your favorite charity, Burris never gets seated. Solid move my ass. Bulletproof? I like what Rich Miller wrote:

"Roland Burris has no idea what sort of heat is coming his way. The hostile microscope. The negative, probing press. He’s never had to endure anything like this. He’s a goner, and he has no clue."

Where's your man Durbin on this? Remember $100.00. I'll let you know where to write the check.

Durbin will start out against him and warm up. No bet. I still think it was a good move for Blago in the circumstances. How is he worse off?

No bet. 'twasn't my major premise anyhow.

Here's my 2 cents for what it is worth.
Blago is an inconsiderate, arrogant idiot. He should have never made the appointment.
Roland Burris should have never accepted the appointment.
Bobby Rush must be smoking reefer if he really believes this appointment or non-acceptance is racist.
I disagree with UMR's assessment. The Governor is worse off because those that did respect before now really don't respect him now. Roland Burris a well known Politician in Illinois. But, the Senate is going to tell Blago where to go and I don't blame them.
