QUINCY AND WESTERN ILLINOIS BLOGOSPHERE ETHICS AND MANNERS: YOUR OPINION SOLICITED

There are a number of reasons a blogger would link another blog. For local blogs, it is a way to promote blogging in the community. For "interest" blogs, it is a service to the linking blogger's readers. It is also a way of reciprocally promoting one's own blog.

But what to do when, after ample time, the linked blog does not reciprocally link? There are a couple of my linked sites that have had plenty of time to return the favor and they have not done so. How long is a reasonable period? In other words when is it time to de-link?

I suspect the answer is completely different for locals than for "interest" blogs but I'm working on it.

Your thoughts?

To do links I was going to have to change the template. I liked the background we have because it's easy for me to see the black letters on yellow background. If you believe we would be better served changing and adding links I will go ahead with it... Joracle

Tony, I don't think I fall into the category of interest blogs. You have been added to my page. Please excuse me, but I blame my laziness and technical idiocy.

I call it looter lazy link

Certain blogs like yours or Rocky 's have all the needed links .

I have tried to keep up, but just the other day I noticed I had left Rocky off the links!!

That is corrected now.
(sorry Rock)

Anybody I miss can drop in a message or post.

How about how long do you leave up a link when that Blog hasn't been updated in quite some time ??

Good post.

as I type this I am at the Drury Plaza on 4th st. in STL and a loud boom went off.

Phat Albert with the Cards just hit a dinger and the fireworks went off.

Cards announcers are not concerned about the Brewers, but they do think a team that rymes with "flubs" have the best shot of winning the division. Wow. they think Lou will turn it around, and then the talent will start to show.

Fire,

After 30 days of inactivity (and we have one example here) I suppose the good manners thing is to ask the bloghost what his intentions are.

Good Point. TYFCB

Rocky,

It kind of depends upon how long the Cubbies are going to let "fig leaf" Izturis take up a roster spot. All the rest of the planets appear pretty well aligned.

Do you think we need to add links then?

O,

That is a style decision for you to make. I think you're different because you link nobody.

You're certainly not a candidate for delinking from the Basin. OTOH, it would probably be good manners to link at least the local folks who are linking your. Your call.

Not exactly on topic, but what is anyone's best guess on how many people actually read their blog? or the Quincy blogs?

The loser in this will be Lootie. I'll have him on the phone about an hour talking me through this. THE ORACLE shall reward him with a twelve of delicious Union Beer.

1020,

In its previous iteration, my blog was getting about 450 discrete hits a day. When I changed to blogger, I decided I didn't want a counter or a tracker.

I would be very surprised if it wasn't over 1000 during the '06 primary but I really have no clue what it is now.

Some of my fellow bloggers from bigger cities do a great deal more but here, I think it's largely limited here by local news stories and what else is going on.

The blogosphere is largely driven here by narrow and parochial issues. Think about all the space that was used on the smoking issue and school zone speeding tickets. Not exactly global thinking.

What is a descrete hit?

discrete hits are unique visitors by IP address. This would be as distinguished from having 100 hits from 25 IP addresses.

Watching some of the local blogs that display counters either now or did in the past, most don't get much more than 100-200 hits even when there is a hot topic. I doubt at anytime you had 1000 unique hits a day. A guy like Inside Dope only gets about 250/day. The Rich Miller spin off, Illinoize gets about 600, Peoria Pundit about the same. Put a counter on, it would be interesting to know if I'm wrong.

This is to be distinguished from a discreet hit, which is what you do when the referee is looking the other way.

Or when you send a fruity drink over to the next table.

Depends upon your marital status, which could cause it to be an abuse of discretion or:

If it is after a six pack or more, a lack of discretion...the difference between a fox and a dog being a six pack.
