VIDEO: HONESTLY SOLICITING YOUR SERIOUS COMMENTS (Please read the preamble before you watch the vid.)
I understand the BSA is reconsidering their "closet gays only" policy and there has been a more permissive one circulated. I understand that everyone, even a prospective public official, is entitled to personal views on this topic. Certainly, most legal scholarship and case law supports the right of the BSA as an NGO to restrict its membership pretty much any way it wants.
Don't care to debate any of that here. What I want to know--and please comment here rather than on FB or Twitter--your impressions, your reactions to what you see. I do not want to argue about it, although I may later share mine. I guess the ultimate question is "how do you feel watching this?"
Click here to watch video (Just a bit more than two minutes).
Whether you feel the topic is the role of a scoutmaster, the rights of NGOs, the speaker's grasp of adult sexual behavior or just "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?," please comment here, as opposed to in the social media. I seriously and earnestly want to here from anyone who will kindly share his or her views on this.
I know what Tookie would have said.

Not qualified or maybe I should say not enlightened enough to be our City Attorney. Appears to know everything, flaunt his awards and is bigoted.
Quite frankly, I would be much more afraid of Lonnie alone with a child than any gay man I know. Intolerance and bigotry are not the values I remember from BSA. Lonnie needs to gain a deeper understanding of what leadership really means.
I think this is a textbook example of logical fallacies. I counted four different logical fallacies in a single viewing, and feel confident that if I watched it again there would be more. Seriously, can't this fellow come up with better arguments in support of his case? These are completely unpersuasive.
This is the guy that Kyle Moore turned to, to manage his campaign. That tells me all I need to know about what kind of person our new mayor truly is. Now he wants this guy to be the top legal dog for our city? He should be ashamed of himself for even considering it. Lonnie Dunn doesn't represent my views, and he would be a vile and sickening representive of our community. There is no place for this type of bigotry in our city government. So far, Kyle Moore's judgement has been easy to question. Putting Lonnie Dunn in any position, brings Kyle's values into judgement. I can only hope the City Council realizes what a travesty this guy would be, and does what Kyle apparently doesn't have the decency to do....saying no to bigotry and intolerence.
Initial thought - self-righteous prig attempting to clothe his bigotry (or self-hatred?) in language intended to show he is both "reasonable" and "only concerned with what's best for the children." A sad little video that would end this guy's political career and public life in my hometown, but I live in one of the most gay (per capita) areas in Michigan if not the country.
Totally agree with Anonymous - this guy seems to really be into his awards. As a former Star Scout, Patrol Leader and Troop Treasurer - my experience was that the guys who went after all the patches generally - though not always - missed the bigger message of Scouting.
As for the content of this video - OMG - I thought we had moved beyond these stereotypes 20 years ago. "Avowed homosexual", molestation, straight scouts being preyed upon by gay scouts. Wow.
I'll never understand the argument that one's sexual orientation and the desire to be treated as an equal - or more precisely not to be treated as a second class citizen - is somehow a political agenda.
The idea that treating gays as God's children is somehow contrary to Biblical teachings is completely contrary to what I hear in my church every Sunday. If JC were on Earth today - pretty sure he would be reminding us of his great command and NOT laying out exceptions to his teaching of "Love your neighbor".
My church senior high school youth group consists of boys and girls who generally travel, eat, work, sleep and worship together, out of town, with adult supervision, for a week each summer. For the 25 or so trips that I am familiar with there has not been a single "molestation". Why is a Scout camp with gay and straight boys any different?
My guess is that a gay scout who knows there is a strong anti-gay culture within Scouting would be very cautious about making any overt advances toward other scouts as he is trying to work through his own emerging understanding of his sexuality.
Dunn's apparent ignorance of human sexuality, and homosexuality in particular, is breathtaking. And potentially tragic. I suspect, however, that he knows exactly what he is doing ... conniving to play to what these days is called "the base" ... the truly ignorant who will vote for the guy who would give Dunn a position in city government.
What does this have to do with his ability to be a lawyer for the city? Do I agree with what he is saying? Absolutely not. Is he a good attorney? You tell me ABC...
Wow. This fellow is a lawyer? Does he know any adolescent that "avows" his/her sexuality? Good point from earlier posts concerning the over the top decoration. Looks like a smoke screen. Beware.
I guess I'm having trouble with the whole "avowed" thang. When I was eleven or twelve, I'm pretty sure I wasn't an "avowed heterosexual". Had somebody told me had a bad avowal, I probably would have asked if there were shots for that. I recall being deeply concerned with baseball, meeting my friends at the pool, making my bike go faster and shooting rodents.
I was probably 13 before I ran into anyone sexually aggressive but her name was Mary Beth and she wasn't into scouting. After that, I was pretty sure I wasn't gay. But..I digress.
Good Night all.
While I have NO party affiliation, I am a pretty conservative (and straight) guy, except when it comes to one’s Religion or sexual orientation. On these subjects I say, “what works for you, works for you. And as long as you don’t force your view on me or anybody else we will get along fine”. Furthermore, I would not know Mr. Dunn if he bit me.
My opinion is different from Mr. Dunn’s, I see no reason why a straight or gay man or woman could not be an effective Scout Master. I see no reason why a straight or gay young person could not be a good Scout. As a Scout Master myself, I have an obligation to vigilantly look for inappropriate behavior and actions on the part of everybody involved.
Now, for the posters that feel that Mr. Dunn’s opinion on this subject would somehow make him an ineffective lawyer for the City of Quincy, I say you need to back up and look again at your view as it makes you seem as bigoted to the left as you claim he is to the right. Every Lawyer I have ever met has been trained to take a position they completely appose and make an effective legal argument in favor of. They are trained that it is their job and keep their personal views out of it. You may say “I disagree with Mr. Dunn”, you can’t say “because I disagree with Mr. Dunn, he is not qualified to be the City ‘s Lawyer”.
Be careful or you could become what you despise.
Mike,
Helpful and provocative. Thank you for coming by...and do come back.
Well said, Mr. McCabe.
Thanks for your voice of moderation and reason. I appreciate it. The irony of Lonnie's homophobia is just astounding. And my best laugh of the day. Glass houses, and all that...:)
I just read the local paper. QNI, you're welcome.
Mr Reeve,
You are correct in stating you would not leave you kid alone with Mr Dunn. Don't leave your wife alone with him either.
