MADOFF'S SOUL

Undeniably, there are a lot of interesting aspects to the Madoff caper. I just want to focus on one.

You think there is any part of him that feels guilt, shame or remorse for the fundmental filthiness of his acts. I'm not talking about grappling with the consequences but, rather, true remorse for hurting other people in a way that cannot be fixed.

My guess is "no". He is a classic narcissist, full of entitlement and the only thing he's sorry about is that gravy train has left the station without him.

Be interested in your thoughts on that. Let's leave the SEC thing of to one side for awhile.

I'm not sure why Bernie "fessed up" to his sons. Perhaps he was hoping to retire, and let them take over; or perhaps he was reaching the point where he had no funds to pay those demanding their money. So the gig was up.

I'd bet on the latter.

In his sentencing statement, he mentioned how he had lied to his wife and kids. But I think the wife did the books, so I'm guessing Bernie was trying to provide cover for his family, right to the bitter end. No remorse at all for the victims.

"It is a tough world, gain people's trust, then pull the rug out from under them."

Sounds like the way much of the business world has been standardized ... two-faced and cutthroat, encouraged by a lack of prosecution of criminal activity.

I do wonder why he didn't head off to some island in exile. Maybe he made a deal to get in the country club prison, with good health care.

Bernie seemed to have a classic sense of entitlement, of the noble class variety ... work and taxes are for "the little people", to use Leona's words.

Considering all Obama's nominees that had tax issues, it seems most of our political class has the same mentality. I believe Goldman Sachs is the biggest "monster" out there though.

A question of interest. How many people would still be employed if they could not perform their jobs?
Now apply the same standard to our respected political parties. How many years will citizens allow this debaucle to continue? I understand the difference of opinions but they had better put their differences aside and do the job they were elected to do. People are getting tired and restless with these antics. I can see a revolt against incumbants approaching.
