THE "BATTLE" APPROACH TO BLOG DISCUSSION

Kind of the whole idea of free speech is the exchange of views. Hopefully that exchange enlightens all of us.

Some of our local colleagues and many other places have moved toward a UFC approach to discussion. "So-and-so really kicked whathisface's a$$ on this thread!" Yeah, it's true sometimes some incredibly one-sided arguments hang out there and it is all we can do not to laugh at the ignorant, bigoted or disturbed. I still think we go farther in individual development and use the internet more constructively by serious but tolerant debate than we do in looking at cyberconversation some kind of electronic UFC.

I have no problem with that concept. Sometimes, I don't think the writer knows the difference. Intentional funny is one thing. Thinking you are in a serious debate and being a neo-laugh-in is a little discouraging.

I disagree with the "UFC = neanderthal-ish". How about street fighting, or fight club, instead?

With monikers like Tookie, THE ORACLE, Senor Badass, THE ADMINISTRATOR, Quincy Fire: News That Burns You Ass, I don't know how serious you want us to be? And as long as none of us are getting paid for this we may as well have fun. Now excuse me please. I have to go toil for Pharaoh!

It isn't how serious the topic may be, it's the idea that somebody has blown out, destroyed, embarassed. Ignorance and intolerance got us into the ugly soup of Iraq. The habit of thinking all discussions are a zero-sum game and the whole can never be greater than the sum of its parts promotes dangerous attitudes.

This is certainly not limited to Quincy blogs.

I also don't exempt myself from occasionally just throwing up my hands and declaring "dumbass" even if I might use another codeword for it.

We can all do better without backing away from our principles.

I laughed and got a phone call with a trail of profanities . Made my damn day !

If others don't care or like it , I don't really give a rats ass . I was laughing and at the moment laughing is good medicine .

I guess we really don't disagree. The folks who are having fun with it...more power to 'em. But there are some others who actually think they are discussing issues. Frightening.

Great point! Some people just try to win just to be winning during discussions. I guess in some cases it's an attempt to validate some form of insecurity, or cover up a childhood scar when they post their strong unsubstantiated opinions on line.

They also seem to use trickery of words and technical spin to gain personal influence over others that are reading the blogs, while at the same time, their efforts appearing to become futile when they refuse to reveal their true identity. Which I feel would add merit to what would otherwise be heard and viewed as in some cases...invisible noise.

It makes little sense to me for them to post THEIR thoughts or opinions in any capacity or intensity when nobody knows who THEY are. Why don't they just keep their thoughts to themselves and save themselves and others some unnecessary keystrokes and eye trash unless they wanted to be taken seriously? I make that statement because most of the time they fail to support their claims and being tough, reckless and anonymous insulates them from any liability or official public scrutiny. What have they got to lose?

It would be very interesting to see how much more bloggers would agree on, and how much more willing they would be to provide a more friendly and courteous environment if they were in the same room together, as opposed to them hiding in their safety zones. Granted I feel that you should be able to post anonymously. After all, when the time comes, we all give our opinion by voting anonymously for those that get paid to tell us how to live.

Additionally, and outside of that, I feel that Magellan would have loved Blogger!

1304,

Sigh....nobody told anybody to compromise anything.

Nobody has to win and nobody has to lose. Both can benefit from hearing the strengths and weaknesses of the other's argument. It is the very concept upon which universities were founded.

I'll never understand why a discussion of civil exchanges of views is heard by some to be a call to "compromise".

If the greek origins of this are too much for you, read a little Stephen Covey. He's kind of the Cliff's Notes version.

Thank You for Compromising By...just kidding. TYFCB

There are dumb people in Q-Town. Every town has them. It's a pointless given. But how am I doing that?

>.....doesn't make u the be all end >all on the int3rn3t

Uh, what? I don't think I made any reference to anything to me being of that nature. This only proves that your type that thinks small and you think in small terms. You're response to my comment pretty much affirms that.

Some issues are black and white. I can have a free exchange of ideas with a colorblind college professor about the color of my car, but I doubt the strengths of his argument will convince me he/she is right or to even move a little.

That was really just North Euro thing. Greeks wore that mistletoe helmet, short skirts and danced together. N/Euros thought they'd done stumbled into a gay bar. It was just a cultural divide--like there are no gays in Paris!

1459,

But you might come away with a better understanding of how frustrating it is for such an able person not to possess the ability to see color. The benefits or civil discourse are rarely the ones we expect.

And although that might make some feel good, it doesn't change the color of the car.

At 4:49 PM, June 25, 2007, Blogger UMRBlog said...

Yeah, some people will be satisfied they vanquished the color blind guy and "won" on the color of the car. More skilled, evolved folks might actually reflected on what benefit could come from civilly discussing the importance of color how a color blind person compensates and, gasp, perhaps even making a new friend.

But you're surely correct. The color of that car isn't changing during the discussion.

I suspect the car stays the same color for you for a very long time.

Colors are great. Black and white are also great values. Sometimes it's easier for some peoples brains to process black and white due to their simplicities.

I've been told at times that I've shown my true colors. But the fact is that I'm a person of many colors. And I think that people in general are very colorful. And that they also possess values. Weather they're good or bad, black or white.

I choose not to confuse being colorful with being a chameleon or a tiger changing it's stripes.

Ya see what I'm saying?
