WEST POINT: SOMETHING TO PISS EVERYBODY OFF
The Righties are unhappy because there's an "best when used by" date on the War Plan. The lefties are unhappy because BHO is not going to plunk his magic twanger and end the war immediately. They are also unhappy because the Prez didn't embrace nation building.
Whether this is courageous or just splitting the middle, I have no idea. But your friendly Basin has a much more fundamental problem with the plan.
The first wave of new troops is largely Marines. The United States Marine Corps is the finest Light Infantry assault force in the history of man. You wanna capture a hill, you send USMC to do it. Light Infantry is not a "stay-in-one-place-and-build-relationships" force. The whole "Hearts and Minds" strategy is counter to what Marines do (Yes, I know they adopted some of this around Fallujah but that was the product of the personality of one officer in one unit, not unique training.). I am deeply concerned that we are asking the First Wave to do something outside of their training and expertise. When you want your appendix out, you don't call a plumber and when you need a new hot water heater, you don't call an optometrist.
I would have preferred some clear thinking about Where AQ is now and what talent packages we have available to do what jobs. I would have preferred somebody to tell me what victory will look like, so we can recognize it when we achieve it. But, of course, I hope this "works", whatever that may mean.

I think the Marines are deploying first because probably they are better equipped for the rapid deployment? And I imagine they are going to areas to engage Taliban fighters rather than run the bootcamps for Afghans. In my book any plan that ticks off both Nancy Pelosi and Sean Hannity has to be a winner.
The CIA guy on "Red Eye" was saying "counterinsurgency" is not some new thing, and is a decades long strategy. Our long term presence other places seems to be stabilizing, but expensive.
The 18 month exit strategy probably revolves more around elections here than stability there, and the announcement itself short circuits the process.
I don't know military strategy, but maybe Marines are "shovel ready" and the next wave could follow on the road they pave (or trail the blaze)? Surely there is a detailed plan.
Appeasing both sides (or pissing off both sides) at home seems a very weak strategy for war. This is much more constipating than going through them like crap through a goose (as Patton said, or at least George C Scott said that).
It is quick maybe, but the same crap may be there when we leave.
I'm sure UMR knows more than the Generals. At your next meeting with Spring, have him get ahold of Obama. He has told us time and time again that he has a personal reltionship with the ditherer.
0825,
You agree, disagree or you just want to piss into my tent? Take a counterpoint beyond general General-worship and we can discuss it.
I don't love the way BHO has handled this but he is trying to alter a lame-ass non-strategy of "invade and ignore" handed down from Dickster and Condi.

It's mostly just pissing in your tent of selective outrage.
I'm sure "selective outrage" is a very meaningful thing to you and you feel very clever invoking it.
Whatever gets ya up in the morning.
