GAS BAGS OVERHEARD AND TAX INCREASES: REPEAT SOMETHING OFTEN ENOUGH AND IT IS TAKEN AS TRUE

Recently, I was at an undisclosed restaurant location. Eating my lunch and reading my newspaper, I was pretty inscrutable.

In the next booth were fat fiftyish, Brooks Brothers know-it-all talking in a loud voice to a finely featured twenty-something young man out of central casting for the YR posterchild contest. Sensing either an idiot, a chicken hawk or both, I tuned in, just in time to hear ....'93 biggest tax increase in history......they get back in...Hell to Pay". It was particularly interesting because there was some kind of melted cheese running down the guy's jaw while he was giving this history lesson. Central Casting didn't really respond (I think he was looking for a mirror). Needing no encouragement, the all-knowing continued with a bunch of doctrinal horseflop before devolving into a discussion about his timeshare (I'm guessing Central Casting didn't want to see the inside of that timeshare....one can only wonder whether the YR actually liked women or was a Loggy and just saw Brooks Bros. as a little bit more date than he was up for.) It was an interesting interlude.

Now I've got nothing against chickenhawks who limit themselves to fowl of an age beyond 18. I even acknowledge we have to have some Republicans. Otherwise who'd buy the too-big houses that are being built in this down economy? Who'd support Isringhausen (the dealer, not the pitcher. Pay attention!). I don't even mind tax protesters (Although I never did get the Indian thing for the tea party--Why share dead turkey with them and then get the Brits pissed off at them? Seriously mixed signals--but I digress.)

No, what I dislike is people who don't do research before they make claims. Biggest tax increase in the history of the republic? Not a close call. Brought to you by none other than Ronnie Reagan and Bob Dole--1982.

Not a close call? Got some numbers to back that up?

If I post this there are 20 commenters calling me a socialist and a liar. Tiger will quote one of his right wing blogs in a vain attempt to discredit me. C'mon UMR. Disable the comment moderation just this once. Let's see what they really think.

Your disdain for financially successful people is remarkable. Not everyone can work for the government like you. Someone has to pay the taxes.

0756,

You have no idea how funny your submission is. It is especially amusing because I I have just returned from an extensive trial in another city for a private client. I gotta tell you, it sure felt like Jefferson's "Nation of small shopkeepers" to me.

You'd have to look far to find a more committed capitalist. I like money, innovation and competition. But cling to your prejudices, at all costs.

Perhaps Tookie and O can 'splain it to you.

I was kind of disappointed 7:56 didn't call you a socialist UMR. You'll just have to work harder to get the deluded right wing fools to fear and loathe you as much as they do THE ORACLE...

Dyslexia 1003,

"No, what I dislike is people who don't do research before they make claims. Biggest tax increase in the history of the republic? Not a close call. Brought to you by none other than Ronnie Reagan and Bob Dole--1982."

Did you really have difficulty picking up the import of my post? If so, and if the summary above didn't bail you out, then you read poorly. Or perhaps you're just blinded by your need for an easily understandable "theme" that the actual language in a post is a mere detail to be finessed to fit into your own, polemic view. Or maybe you're just one of the non-fact checking gas bags I was discussing. Pay attention, here, I didn't accuse you of being a chicken hawk. The gas bag in my narrative just happened to be an apparent chickenhawk. Not all gas bags are necessarily chickenhawks.

Happy theming and make sure never to let any facts or explicit language get in your way.

Oh, you are correct about one thing. There is one grammo in my post. I'll refund the price of your subscription.

Tookie,

I'll look at the beemer you discuss to see if it hails from Springpatch or St. Louis. I think it's the latter.

If from STL then he should be forced to turn in the keys . He not only over paid , but has to drive for service .

Issy comes here with a loner and they meet you at your house or in my case superwalmart .

That Springpatch dealership owns 70% of the central Il market .

Not bad for a kid with a dream . Jeff is 4 years older than myself .

It's hard to beat a GREAT product at a good price with 48 months of zero costs but "shoes" and the service guys know you by name .

And to boot I bought my boss's car ( 2 yrs old and her mom was the only owner) for exactly their trade in price .......DEAL OF A LIFE TIME . Even my banker looks at me and says "How the hell did you do that ?"

Issy loves repeat business .

If Jimmy P went to STL , he must turn in the keys and vote Repub for the rest of his life .

Hahahahaha

You don't always have to be such a smart ass. You made the claim that Reagan's tax increase was bigger than Clinton's. So much bigger, it's not even close. You can't back it up your claim with facts. Do you then dislike yourself for not researching before making claims? Does this qualify you as a gasbag chickenhawk?

0959,

I was unaware that there was a time limit for the request for data. I have been away from my research materials practicing capitalism out of town.

Tee up my writing, then call me a smart ass....excellent method for the scholarly exchange of ideas.

Well, you would think if you devote a post to your dislike for gay republicans claims without facts, that you would have the facts on hand when making claims.

When I wrote the post, I did. When you wanted me to do your research for you, I was far away in a motel room and the Gideon Bible in my room was unhelpful on the topic.

You should meditate or something. You clearly lack patience.

This is from an October 1994 Wall Street Journal--that great friend of democrats in general and Bill Clinton in particular-- analysis piece

"Contrary to Republican claims, the 1993 package is not 'the largest tax increase in history.' The 1982 deficit reduction package of President Reagan and Sen. Robert Dole in a GOP-controlled Senate was a bigger tax bill, both in 1993-adjusted dollars and as a percentage of the overall economy."

The Republican-controlled Joint Committee on taxation and the New York Times later reached the same conclusions.

In fact, the only conservative of any note at all who still occasionally makes this claim is David Horowitz but even he only does it in front of Kool Aid drinkers' groups because in an early 2001 debate with a couple of actual journalists he got his glutes handed to him on this subject on New York local television.
