A NATIONAL TREASURE GONE

Ernie Harwell is dead.  If you know, you mourn.  If you don't know, I can't explain it to you.

Vin Scully is the last of the great ones still standing. The guys who had to paint the picture because there was no picture.

Now we get blow-dried, watered-down, third generation snarkmiesters who actually believe they are the reason we are watching the event.

Scully, Harwell and Buck became a part of our lives because they didn't force themselves on you. They believed the game came first and they knew their role.

Does this mean we're down to just Vin Scully?

Don't laugh but we still have Milo Hamilton. He's a tweener.

All three of those guys were great but Harwell ran so incredibly deep and had to carry so many boob partners, I give him the all time edge.

C'mon...you remember how brutal Shannon was for his first few years?

Buck has to get points for that.

Shannon wanted to learn. Buck was there for that. It was Buck who walked out on Bryant Gumbel. I appreciate the sentiment but Ernie would have honored the contract.

An announcer of Ernie Harwell's quality is one of life's sublime, transcendant pleasures. What a voice. What a guy. Can we say Scully is No.1 & Ernie is No.1A ? Bad Partners are part of the game, like a short porch or the Green Monster. In flog you have the rough or sand.{Although, disasters like Shannon are akin to the DH or Domes.} Milo was/is pretty darn good & I'd rank him with local favorite Buck Sr. {"Go Crazy" is pretty weak as a Best Call.} Both Milo & Buck suffered at the lips of the Worst Bad Partner of Them All. The most overrated, unintelligent, unobservant, egotistical, mushmouthed drunken announcer ever. You know who I mean. "It's deep, It's deep. It's back. It's gotta a chaaaaaance..............The second basemans got it."
